What to confirm below the dust collector hopper
A rotary valve can discharge collected dust while maintaining an air seal between the hopper and the downstream equipment. The required configuration depends on the collector pressure or vacuum, dust behavior, maximum dust loading and the destination below the valve.
Excess air leakage can disturb gravity discharge and carry light dust back toward the filters. Confirm the hopper outlet, flange seal and available headroom, then monitor dust removal and collector differential pressure after commissioning.
Dust collector rotary valve checklist
- State the normal and maximum hopper pressure or vacuum.
- Provide the dust type, particle behavior, loose bulk density and maximum expected discharge rate.
- Confirm the hopper outlet, flange pattern, face-to-face height and downstream connection.
- Define whether discharge is continuous or sequenced with other dust-removal equipment.
- Identify abrasive, sticky, fibrous or potentially combustible dust before rotor and seal selection.
- Provide motor supply, control interlocks, duty cycle and required maintenance access.
Do not assume a universal clearance or speed
Rotor clearance, blade or wiper material, speed and leakage acceptance vary with the valve design and process. Use the approved project drawing and manufacturer instructions rather than a generic value.

Questions before configuration
Why does air leakage matter below a dust collector?
On a collector operating under negative pressure, leakage through the discharge device can pull outside air into the hopper. This can disturb the fall of light dust, return it toward the filters and increase collector differential pressure.
Which data is needed to select a dust collector rotary valve?
Provide collector pressure or vacuum, dust type and bulk density, maximum dust loading or discharge rate, temperature, hopper and flange dimensions, downstream destination, duty cycle, motor supply and any hazardous-area requirements.
Can a rotary valve discharge dust continuously and maintain an air seal?
An appropriately selected valve can provide continuous dust discharge while maintaining a pressure boundary between the hopper and outlet. Actual leakage and capacity depend on the dust, pressure differential, rotor design, speed, clearances and condition.
